Memorializing Traffic Deaths With an Artist’s Touch

On Sunday morning several people gathered at the corner of 53rd Street and Ninth Avenue in Manhattan, spread a paper stencil over the sidewalk and then used cans of white and red spray paint to cover it. A moment later the result was visible: a 6-foot-by-3-foot image, resembling a detailed woodcut, that featured a pair of wings surrounded by roses.
